The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
