British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
